Struggling Against CCP's Tyranny for 66 Years: Commemoration of the Tibet National Uprising Day in Toronto and Ottawa
2025年3月10日，是图博（Tibet）起义日66周年纪念日。加拿大藏人协会（CTAO）安大略分会、四水六岗加拿大分部（Dhokham Shushi Gangdruk Canada）、藏人青年会多伦多分会（RTYC）、藏人妇女会多伦多分会（TWAO）、自由图博学生运动多伦多分会（SFT Toronto）、渥太华藏人社区协会（Ottawa Tibetan Community Association）与魁北克藏人文化协会（Tibetan Cultural association Quebec）联合主办了渥太华和多伦多两地的大型游行集会。活动邀请了加拿大国会及省议员、政要，支持藏人的其他族裔民主人士到场发言，藏人社区、港人、华人民主人士、欧洲裔加拿大人等千余人参加了本次纪念活动。
March 10, 2025, marks the 66th anniversary of the Tibet National Uprising Day. Canada Tibet Association Ontario (CTAO), Dhokham Shushi Gangdruk Canada, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of Toronto(RTYC), Tibetan Women's Association Ontario(TWAO), Students for a Free Tibet of Toronto(SFT Toronto), Ottawa Tibetan Community Association (OTCA), and Tibetan Cultural Association of Quebec (TCAQ) jointly organized large-scale parades and gatherings in Ottawa and Toronto. The event invited Canadian Members of Parliament, senator of Canada, lawmakers, and prominent figures who support Tibetans to speak, with over a thousand participants from the Tibetan community, Hong Kongers, Chinese pro-democracy activists, and European Canadians attending the commemoration.

上午11点，活动在国会山前开始，人群由渥太华当地藏人、魁北克藏人代表及凌晨乘坐大巴来到渥太华进行声援的多伦多藏人社区代表，共约200人构成。
Ottawa
At 11 AM, the event began in front of Parliament Hill. The crowd, consisting of around 200 people, included local Tibetans from Ottawa, representatives from the Tibetan community in Quebec, and Tibetan community members from Toronto who had arrived by bus in the early morning to join the rally in solidarity.
渥太华藏人社区协会成员扎西次仁（Tashi Tsering）首先致辞，他回顾了过去66年中，图博被中共暴政非法占领和暴力压制，超过一百万藏人失去生命，数十万人被迫流亡海外。但以达赖喇嘛尊者奠定的非暴力理念和中道政策，让图博人民始终坚持通过对话与和平解决冲突。但中国共产党背弃其创始理念和对藏人的协议及承诺，强行推行中国民族统一的虚假概念，对图博实施同化政策，近年又大力限制藏语教育，破坏藏文化。藏人需要应对这些新旧挑战。
Tashi Tsering, a member of OTCA, delivered the opening speech by reading the Kashag’s statement on the 66th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day. In the past 66 years during which Tibet was illegally occupied and violently suppressed by the CCP, resulting in the loss of over one million Tibetan lives and the forced exile of hundreds of thousands. However, the non-violent philosophy and middle-way approach established by His Holiness the Dalai Lama have allowed the Tibetan people to persist in seeking conflict resolution through dialogue and peace. Yet, the Chinese Communist Party has betrayed its founding principles, agreements, and promises made to the Tibetan people, forcefully imposing a false concept of Chinese national unity, implementing assimilation policies in Tibet, and, in recent years, severely restricting Tibetan language education and undermining Tibetan culture. Tibetans are now facing these ongoing and new challenges.
加拿大图博委员会（Canada Tibet Committee）主席桑贝（Samphel）在演讲中指出，图博的抗争不仅是为自己的自由和尊严战斗，更是在为普世价值而斗争。图博人民的声音在中国被压制，因此必须更加有力地发声，在场的很多藏人经历几代流亡，已经是加拿大公民，需要通过与加拿大政府和议会的互动以及选票来推动支持图博的政策。他还强调，图博有着悠久历史和文化，不仅是一个民族，更是一种文明，决不能被视为中国共产党在其建政后捏造的56个民族之一。他还表示，图博人民必须坚持自己的身份和价值观，继续为争取人权与自由而努力，并呼吁更多的人参与到这一事业中来。
Mr. Samphel, the Chairman of Canada Tibet Committee (CTC), pointed out in his speech that the struggle of Tibet is not only a fight for its own freedom and dignity, but also a battle for universal values. The voices of the Tibetan people are suppressed in China, and therefore, it is crucial to raise their voices more forcefully. Many Tibetans present have experienced generations of exile and are now Canadian citizens. They must push for policies supporting Tibet through interaction with the Canadian government and parliament, as well as through voting. He also emphasized that Tibet has a long history and culture, and is not merely an ethnic group, but a civilization. It must never be regarded as one of the 56 ethnic groups fabricated by the Chinese Communist Party after the founding of the People's Republic of China. He further stated that the Tibetan people must maintain their identity and values, continue to fight for human rights and freedom, and called for more people to join this cause.
从蒙特利尔赶来的魁北克藏人文化协会代表晋美（Jigme）用法语做演讲，他回顾了中共对图博语言、文化、宗教及人民的摧残，而图博人民从未对其家园和同胞所遭遇的暴行有过沉默。他提到，去年12月，中国外交部发布了一项对加拿大支持藏人权利和维吾尔人权利的机构及个人的反制措施，制裁了加拿大图博委员会5名成员，中共的暴行仍在继续。此外，2025年1月份日喀则地区的定日县强烈地震和2月达赖喇嘛尊者的哥哥嘉乐敦珠逝世也给藏人社区带来巨大伤痛。生死的轮回不会停息，在每天都会失去图博守护者的同时，在场的各位更需要保护图博的文化和身份。
Jigme, a representative from the QTCA who traveled from Montreal, delivered his speech in French. He reviewed the CCP's destruction of Tibetan language, culture, religion, and people, noting that the Tibetan people have never been silent about the atrocities faced by their homeland and fellow Tibetans. He mentioned that in December of last year, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued countermeasures against Canadian organizations and individuals who support Tibetan and Uyghur rights, sanctioning five members of the Canada Tibet Committee. The CCP's atrocities continue. Additionally, the strong earthquake in the Dingri County of Shigatse in January 2025 and the death of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's brother, Gyalo Thondup, in February have brought immense pain to the Tibetan community. The cycle of life and death does not cease, and while we lose Tibetan protectors every day, those present must work even harder to protect Tibetan culture and identity.

Kunsel, a representative of the Students for a Free Tibet from Toronto and a first-year high school student, spoke about how the CCP continuously attempts to erase Tibetan culture, language, and history, forcing Tibetans to lose their identity, demolishing temples, imprisoning monks, and even forcibly sending large numbers of Tibetan children to boarding schools. Despite this, Tibetans persist in resistance both domestically and internationally, refusing to be extinguished. The issue of Tibet is not just a Tibetan issue, but a global one. Fighting for Tibet is about defeating tyranny with justice and ensuring that the world does not succumb to dictatorship. Tibet was once free, and it will undoubtedly regain its freedom in the future.
前加拿大藏裔议员德吉（Dekyi）女士最后发言，回顾了图博人民的坚韧抗争，特别是年轻一代如何继续传承和捍卫图博文化与身份，她很欣喜地看到在场有很多藏人青少年为图博发声。藏人首次移民加拿大已有55年，她正在参与整理书写这类历史。她提到，自己曾在日内瓦和世界各地举办了同情藏人的活动，包括在联合国人权理事会。即使藏人团队非常小，也在国际社会不断发挥着影响力，一直让中共倍感头疼，因为藏人始终坚持现身——无论是10人、20人、100人，还是1000人——都在为图博和中共殖民下的藏人发声。
Former Canadian Tibetan Member of Parliament, Ms. Dekyi, gave the final speech, reflecting on the resilient struggle of the Tibetan people, especially how the younger generation continues to inherit and defend Tibetan culture and identity. She expressed her delight in seeing many Tibetan youth present, speaking out for Tibet. Tibetans have been immigrating to Canada for 55 years, and she is involved in documenting and writing about this history. She mentioned that she had co-organized solidarity events for Tibetans in Geneva and around the world, including at the United Nations Human Rights Council. Even though the Tibetan community is very small, it continues to exert influence in the international community, which has always been a source of great concern for the CCP. Tibetans have remained visible — whether it’s 10, 20, 100, or 1,000 people — speaking out for Tibet and for Tibetans under CCP colonial rule.

The rally then marched from Parliament Hill, chanting slogans such as "Free Tibet", "Bhod Gyalo" and "Tibet Belongs to Tibetans" walking all the way to the front of the Chinese Embassy to protest.

At 9:30 AM, the crowd gathered at Masaryk-Cowan Park in downtown Toronto, playing the Tibetan national anthem and the Canadian national anthem, followed by a moment of silence for the victims who were killed by the CCP. Representatives from Tibetan NOGs in Toronto then took turns delivering speeches.
本次活动的主办方之一，自由图博学生运动多伦多分会2024年12月新任副主席丹增·昆桑（Tenzin Kunsang，Michele）是多伦多都市大学政治与治理专业三年级学生，她在演讲中强调了图博人民不屈不挠的抗争精神。她表示，今天她并不要求大家感到悲伤，而是要感受到火焰，要感受到愤怒——不是那种激发仇恨的愤怒，而是激发行动的愤怒。她呼吁大家以行动回应中共的压迫，这种行动不是使用武器或暴力，而是用声音、意志和对正义的坚定信念去斗争。她认为图博人民的抗争代表了坚持与希望，并呼吁每个人都站出来为图博发声，用自己的力量推动改变，直到图博重获自由。图博终有一天会再次崛起，而历史将铭记所有不屈的人。
One of the event organizers, Tenzin Kunsang (Michele), the newly appointed Vice President of SFT Toronto in December 2024, is a third-year student in Political Science and Governance at Toronto Metropolitan University. In her speech, she emphasized the unyielding spirit of the Tibetan people's struggle. She stated that today, she does not ask people to feel sadness, but to feel the fire, to feel the anger — not the anger that fuels hatred, but the anger that ignites action. She called on everyone to respond to the CCP's oppression with action, an action not of weapons or violence, but of voice, will, and a firm belief in justice. She believes the struggle of the Tibetan people represents perseverance and hope, and she urged everyone to speak out for Tibet, using their own strength to push for change, until Tibet regains its freedom. Tibet will one day rise again, and history will remember all those who remained unsurrendered.
随后丹增·昆桑和藏人中小学生在现场表演了藏人儿童在中共寄宿学校悲惨境遇的情景话剧，并提醒在场人群关注习近平为首的中共迫害藏人儿童这一正在进行的罪恶。
上半场活动结束，人群开始徒步6公里一路高喊口号走向中共驻多伦多总领馆。
She, along with Tibetan elementary and middle school students, then performed a skit depicting the tragic situation of Tibetan children in CCP-run boarding schools. She reminded the crowd to pay attention to the ongoing crime of the CCP, led by Xi Jinping, persecuting Tibetan children.
With the first half of the event concluded, the rally began a 6-kilometer march toward the Chinese Consulate in Toronto, chanting slogans along the way.

Around 1:30 PM, the marching group joined the rally waiting in front of the Chinese Consulate, bringing the total number of participants to over a thousand. The rally began with a speech by Bhutila Karpoche, a two-term Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament and former Deputy Speaker of the Ontario Legislature. She reminded everyone that Tibetans inside Tibet can be imprisoned simply for discussing their linguistic and cultural rights. Despite decades of repression, Tibetans remain unwavering in their struggle, fighting for freedom, justice, and the preservation of their identity.
加拿大国会议员加内特·朱尼厄斯（Garnett Genuis）在自己的演讲中重申对图博自由斗争的坚定支持，并称其为其他追求真相与和解者的典范。他表示，图博人民经历了数十年的压迫，但他们的坚韧与对正义的承诺，仍持续激励着全球的抗争运动。
Canadian Member of Parliament Garnett Genuis reaffirmed his strong support for Tibet’s struggle for freedom in his speech, calling it a model for others seeking truth and reconciliation. He stated that the Tibetan people have endured decades of oppression, yet their resilience and commitment to justice continue to inspire resistance movements around the world.

Namgyal Wangmo, a representative of the Tibetan community and the Political Coordinator of the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Center, spoke on behalf of the five Tibetan NGOs hosting the event in Toronto.
"We must remember this day—March 10, 1959. On Tibet’s sacred land, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army massacred innocent, unarmed Tibetans and poorly equipped Tibetan resistance fighters. Among them were thousands of monks, nuns, parents, grandparents, and young people.
We must also remember that on March 10, 1959, the Chinese Communist Party attempted to assassinate His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, forcing him to leave Tibet, to leave his homeland, and seek refuge in India to fight for Tibet’s future. We should commemorate and remember March 10, 1959, because under the leadership of the dictator and murderer Mao Zedong, and later leaders such as Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, the Chinese People's Liberation Army turned the sacred land of Lhasa into a site of bloodshed, a place marked by acts of terror and crimes against humanity."

She pointed out that the Chinese Communist Party has ruled Tibet for 66 years, yet the Chinese government has never been held accountable for what it has done before, during, and after March 10, 1959, and continues to do today. "We are not Chinese, and Tibet is not a part of China. I want you to know and remember the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made for Tibet. How do we remember and honor the lives lost for Tibet? 169 Tibetans who self-immolated—how do we honor them? We will commemorate them through our efforts for a Free Tibet, by seeking unity among Tibetans, between Tibetans and governments, especially with the Canadian government."
She concluded by emphasizing that a united Tibet will never be defeated.

Canadian Senator Consiglio Di Nino expressed his long-standing and unwavering support for Tibet in his speech, emphasizing his strong condemnation of China's atrocities. He mentioned that despite global criticism of China's actions, the CCP continues to oppress Tibetans and other groups. He called on everyone to stand up and continue speaking out for Tibet until it regains its freedom. He stated that he would continue to support Tibetans and dedicate his life to fighting for Tibet's freedom. He concluded by warning the CCP that if it does not change its policies, it will ultimately pay a heavy price.
民运领袖盛雪女士代表支持藏人的华人社区做了发言，她表示图博的抗争运动是最强大且最成功的运动之一，但仍未达到最终目标，即未实现图博的自由，这与过去几十年中，世界对中国共产党（CCP）的暴政存在误解有很大关系。但如今局势已经发生变化，世界逐渐认识到中共暴政的邪恶。

Pro-democracy leader Sheng Xue delivered a speech on behalf of the Chinese community that supports Tibetans. She stated that the Tibetan struggle is one of the strongest and most successful movements, but it has not yet achieved its ultimate goal—Tibet's freedom. She attributed this to the widespread misunderstanding of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) tyranny over the past few decades. However, the situation has now changed, and the world is gradually recognizing the evil of CCP's tyranny.
She called for all Tibetans and their supporters to unite more strongly and move forward together, fighting for both Tibet's freedom and China's freedom, as the CCP's tyranny not only enslaves the Chinese people but also poses a threat to the entire world.
多伦多支持民运会主席吴温温女士代表港人社区做了发言。她说，1959年图博人民为了捍卫家园、宗教自由和人权，付出了巨大牺牲，英勇反抗中国的占领。中国政府的暴行，包括屠杀无辜的藏人、强制拆除寺庙、剥夺言论自由和宗教自由等，都应该被视为“侵略性犯罪”，这些行为不应被容忍。

Ms. Winnie Ng, the President of Toronto Association for Democracy in China (TADC), spoke on behalf of the Hong Kong community. She stated that in 1959, the Tibetan people made immense sacrifices to defend their homeland, religious freedom, and human rights, bravely resisting China’s occupation. The Chinese government's atrocities, including the massacre of innocent Tibetans, forced demolition of temples, and the deprivation of freedom of speech and religious freedom, should be considered "aggressive crimes" that should not be tolerated.
She mentioned that she had visited the Tibetan Center multiple times, urging people to sign petitions to stop the CCP's cross-border interference. She concluded by stating that Tibet rightfully belongs to Tibetans, and Hong Kong belongs to the people of Hong Kong, emphasizing that global democratic forces should unite and continue to fight for the freedom and human rights of Tibet, Hong Kong, and other regions.
